Soda siphon (popularly also a siphon) is a device for the preparation of soda using CO2 (carbon dioxide) gas chargers. The first concept was introduced as early as 1790 in France, but the modern siphon bottle as we know it today was created in 1829, when two French people claimed a patent for a hollow corkscrew, which was drilled into the bottle cap and allowed the valve to drain the contents; the pressure was maintained in the bottle and carbon dioxide was prevented from evaporating from the beverage.
Soda siphons were especially popular in the 1920s and 1930s, but nowadays they are returning to their place in households and bars.
